Every cut to a branch of a tree affects the change in growth and therefore no branch should be removed without a reason. Some of the more common reasons for tree pruning include the following:

Remove infectious/diseased parts of a tree
Remove damaged caused by storms
Encourage growth, light and/or air circulation by thinning the crown
Reduce the overall height of trees
Remove branches that are otherwise being obstructive
Cosmetic or design purposes

Tree Pruning Service

GPM Enterprises Tree Pruning Service through our certified arborists will ensure that your tree is being pruned by a professional in a way that encourages growth. In most cases, pruning to remove weak, diseased or dead limbs may take place any time of year – having little effect on the tree. Some trees such as ‘Maple’ or ‘Birch’ tend to result in what is known as ‘bleeding’ if pruned to early in the spring. Heavy pruning just after the spring growth months should always be avoided. These and other factors are considered by our certified arborists when pruning any customer’s trees.

Our Professional Tree Pruning Experts will evaluate your trees to determine the best actions and techniques to take.

Tree Pruning Techniques GPM Enterprises’s Tree Pruning Techniques
Specific types of pruning may be necessary to maintain a mature tree in a healthy, safe, and attractive condition.

Cleaning is the removal of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly-attached and low-vigor branches from the crown of a tree

Thinning is the selective removal of branches to increase the amount of light and the air flow through the crown. Thinning opens the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs, and helps retain the tree’s natural shape

Raising removes the lower branches from a tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, and vistas

Reduction reduces the size of a tree, often for clearance for utility lines. Reducing the height or spread of a tree is best accomplished by pruning back the leaders and branch terminals to lateral branches that are large enough to assume the terminal roles (at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem). Compared to topping, reduction helps maintain the form and structural integrity

Proper Pruning Techniques Proper Tree Pruning Cuts
At GPM Enterprises we take special care when pruning your trees. Because every cut changes and affects the way that your tree responds it’s important to have a professional assess your tree(s) to ensure proper maintenance. Pruning usually takes place just outside the branch collar. The branch collar contains what is known as ‘trunk’ or ‘parent branch’ tissues which if pruned will cause unnecessary damage to the tree. If a branch needs to be shortened we will generally prune the branch back to the lateral branch or bud. Pruning that is internodal or made between buds or branches may result in stem decay, sprout production and otherwise misdirected growth. Where large limbs need to be removed the weight of the limb is taken into consideration first. To solve weight issues with heavy limbs an undercut is made anywhere from 12 to 18 inches from where the limb is attached to the tree. From there a second cut is made from the top which is either directly above or a few inches away further out from the limb depending on the circumstances. Finally the remaining stub is removed by pruning back the branch collar. This technique is not only safe but also lessens the chances of tearing or splitting the bark.

How Much Should be Pruned?

Pruned TreeThere are several things that GPM Enterprises’s Tree Pruning Experts consider with respect to how much pruning should take place. These include such things as the size of the tree, species, age as well as the cosmetic considerations of the client. Younger trees, by the mere fact that they are younger, have an increased tolerance if live tissue is removed compared to that of older trees. Trees can always recover faster and more successfully from several small tree pruning cuts compared to a large one. Our Tree Pruning Experts never remove too much foliage and small branches. We also know how important it is to maintain an even distribution throughout long limbs at the lower levels of the crown. Too much tree pruning can result in a reduction of the trees sugar production ability and may also result in ‘tip-heavy’ limbs. Little routine pruning is required for mature trees. As a general rule in the industry our Tree Pruning Experts never remove more the 1-quarter of a trees (leaf bearing) crown. With GPM Enterprises’s Tree Pruning Service our staff will work closely with you to ensure the desired tree result is met in way that benefits the tree.

With GPM Enterprises you can feel confident knowing that your trees will be pruned in a professional manner that will not only compliment your existing landscape but will also ensure the longevity of your trees life for years to come.
